Microsoft back sustainable jet fuel company Dimensional Energy
Microsoft will support the company that produces sustainable jet fuel, Dimensional Energy, as an investor in a $20 million investment round.
December 27, 2023 13:18In the midst of the current climate crisis and the need to develop effective alternatives is the main issue facing many industries. Particularly, air travel has been viewed (SAF) as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 80percent compared to conventional jet fuel - as a means to meet carbon reduction goals and to meet corporate targets for quotas.
Enter Dimensional Energy. Based in New York, the company utilizes carbon dioxide emissions and water to make an environmentally sustainable air fuel (SAF) and is getting noticed - as the company announced that on the 12th of December (Dec.12) the fact that it had closed the deal worth $20 million in the Series A round of funding that comprised Microsoft's Climate Fund.
In a statement about the reason they are providing funding, the senior director of Microsoft's climate innovation funding fund Brandon Middaugh said in a statement:
"The world requires immediate and swift decarbonization in all areas, as well Dimensional Energy shows great promise as a cleaner and less carbon aviation option, as well as a reduction in industrial emissions."
"Microsoft has been the first to adopt sustainable aviation fuels and views this market as crucial to global decarbonization. This is the reason Microsoft's climate change fund is a great supporter of Dimensional Energy's work as an equity direct investor."
Other investors, which were led by Envisioning Partners, were: United Airlines' sustainable flight fund, RockCreek's intelligent aviation futures fund, DSC Investment, Delek US, New York Ventures, and investors who are already in the market such as Elemental Excelerator and Chloe Capital which helped raise the total amount to $28 million.
In an interview with TechCrunch, Dimensional Energy founder and CEO Jason Salfi said:
"The extracting and the production of hydrocarbons have led to not just climate change, but also the displacement of indigenous communities across the globe and a myriad of environmental disasters."
"Dimensional Energy is a substitute for petroleum made from carbon dioxide as well as water. Dimensional is determined to source feedstocks in harmony with the environment and communities in which plants are constructed."
Dimensional Energy on the rise
Following this latest investment, Lafarge announced plans to construct a modern power-to-liquids fuel plant and the fuel source coming from the Richmond Cement Plant located in British Columbia, Canada in collaboration with carbon capture company Svante.
It also has plans for Dimensional Energy's first direct to consumer (BTC) as well as commercial (BTB) items, including a fossil-free surf wax as well as an alternative to fats that are cruelty-free, specifically designed to cater to vegan food producers.
Dimensional Energy's primary customers are freight companies, airlines and chemical companies. In the course of this year, they signed an agreement with the aircraft maker Boom Supersonic to sell 5 million Gallons of SAF annually for Boom's flight testing program.
The balancing act between sustainability and making profits can be a challenge However, Dimensional generates revenue through contracted offtake agreements and is looking for long-term agreements with airlines as well as specialist chemical companies.
