It's one of those most bizarre tech stories of recent times, Steam Deck manufacturer Valve has advised people to stop inhaling fumes that may be emitted from the exhaust vent on the machine.

The action has become a meme in recent weeks as it has been discovered that the Steam Deck is prone to emitting a distinct smell from its insides, and taking a breath through the vent has become a popular pastime for some users on social networks.

The handheld PC has been subjected to stringent security tests before it goes to market, inhaling hot air from inside the device is a risk that was never discussed in an engineering meeting.

"We understand that it may be a viral meme, however do not engage in this kind of act to protect your health.

Although it's not clear what's causing this smell, theories abound on Reddit that the cause is heating of the plastic in the case rather than something internal like the thermal paste, or even any of the internal metals or other components.

Like any warning, the flip side is generally that it draws an increasing number of people who are interested in the subject, but inhaling any fumes is rarely beneficial for your health, and using it for meme value is not something Valve thinks you should be doing.
